Hey fellow designer,

Since you’re interested in this topic, I suppose you want to pursue a freelance designer path. As exciting as it sounds, it is also equally tricky. This is why I decided to share a few tips on how to make this easier at the beginning — I’m going to talk about clients, rates, making money from projects and passive income.

Before making any final decision, ask yourself these fundamental questions:

  • do you have savings, that will keep you afloat for at least half a year? (and also to cover up some unexpected things, like your macbook/imac/ etc. crashing)

  • are you able to stay motivated and positive even when things get hard?

  • are you enough self-disciplined to be your own boss?

  • do you have enough industry experience?

  • are you confident about your design skills? (going freelance is definitely not for juniors)

  • are you ready to take lots of effort in promoting yourself and work extra hours? (often not very profitable — mostly at the beginning)

If your answers are ALL yes, then it’s a good idea!

(1. Where to search for clients?)

Most important rule: never spam people. Spamming of any kind (inviting strangers, cold mailing, etc.) will get you nowhere – it just makes people really irritated.

In a long run, you don’t want to reach out to people. You want people to reach out to you first.

Be visible online. Make sure that the examples of your work are easy to find. Before you launch your freelance rocket for good, take some time to open and work on social media accounts and public portfolios:

(Dribbble, Behance – the best way to get clients)

  1. Post regularly and monitor trends (this is important to get other users’ attention). Make sure that examples of your work are different styles/ for various devices and represent different industries (health, finance, wellness, fitness, ecommerce, etc.) and tag your work, so people searching for certain examples of products will be able to find you easily.

  2. Invest in advertising on Dribbble – this is a new, very promising feature on this platform.

(Instagram – good way to get clients)

1. Create a personal designer account, with most important information (your full name, profession, all necessary contact — include email in the bio — contact buttons are not enough)

2. Post regularly. Simple tutorials, examples of your work, examples of cool UI, catchy quotes and helpful tips will help you gain followers and overall traction.

Facebook,Twitter (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter)

From my experience, they are not a good place to search for projects (especially in the beginning) – but still good to have those just in case. Followers are always followers – they may come in handy. Post inspiring quotes, helpful links to tutorials and freebies – and get involved in the conversations.

(Post redesigns)

Know a product that could use some redesigning? Do it. Show before and after. Write a short case study. Post it on your social media.

It is important to show something visually appealing and thoughtful (especially before/after so people can see the difference) – this backs up your skills and shows what kind of expertise you can offer to your customer.

(2. Do I need to have a separate website for my portfolio?)

No, not really.

I know many designers who post all of their work on Dribbble (the new version of the platform offers a great way to showcase your projects in a case study manner) and use it as the one and only online portfolio on a daily basis (and get many clients this way).

And, Behance is, well, all about being a personal portfolio. Yet, I believe that investing your time in Dribbble will be more profitable.

(3. Fixed price or hourly rate?)

(Fixed price)

Good for your customer, worse for you (the probability that you will end up doing countless feedback rounds and crying yourself to sleep is high).

(Hourly rate)

Worse for your customer, good and safe for you (you get paid for every hour you spend on a project, even for countless feedback rounds).

If the project is small (private person, a small startup, not that much work – less than a month) – try with the fixed price. It will be easier to estimate it for a small amount of work without going too low/risking too much of your time.

If the project is bigger (established company or startup, lots of work, seems complicated – more than a month of work) – go for an hourly rate. It is almost impossible/extremely hard to estimate the amount of time it is going to take you. Hourly rate seems like a safe option here!

(4. How to make a passive income?)

It is better to have even a small passive income each month, than none at all – extra money is always extra money, even if it only buys you a coffee every morning. In a designer world there are plenty of ways to do it:

(Sell goodies)

Think icon sets, 2d/3d illustrations, vectors, photos, etc. on the platforms like Dribbble or Creative Market.

(Sell unused projects)

A logo that was not accepted by the client? An unused UI design for a project that did not start, or the client did not pay? (Sadly, it happens). Don’t just throw it away — make use of it (make use of everything you do, basically). You can sell unused projects (ideally, at a slightly lower price) on the platforms mentioned earlier.

(Start writing on Medium/Youtube channel)

You don’t need to be a professional writer or have brilliant movie editing skills. Use what you know and what you can do to start. You will become better as the time goes/as more you write/as more you edit.

(Think products)

Being a freelance designer doesn’t mean you can‘t invest in your own product or startup idea — actually, I would strongly encourage you to think about what product you could potentially sell. Even if it’s an ebook or a video course — it’s definitely worth trying. Having an idea for an app? Talk to a fellow programmer and create something (even just for fun). Who knows, maybe you’ll invent a new TikTok?

Remember that taking the first step is always the hardest part. Making sure you’ll gain income from different areas is a key to success. Try to stay visible online and post your work regularly, so the others could acknowledge you and your skills. Don’t give up and stay positive.
