Tipping the driver

In North America, whenever you receive any kind of service, including when you take a taxi or Uber, you are normally expected to give a tip. How good, fast or polite the service was determines how much you should tip. For average service - nothing special - tipping 10% of the total (before taxes) is fair. If you thought the service was wonderful, you can tip 15-20%.

On the other hand, if you were really unhappy with how you were treated or the driver got lost or was rude, you can send them a message by leaving no tips at all.

In the lesson, the passenger let the taxi driver keep the change, which is a common way of tipping.

But what if the cost is $15, you give $20 and the driver doesn’t give you any change back. $5 is more than what you want to tip. In this kind of situations, you can simply say to the driver, “please give me $3 dollars back. You can keep $2.”
