How do tropical cyclones（热带气旋） form from smaller tropical disturbances? Only a fraction of tropical disturbances evolve into the highly energetic monsters called cyclones or hurricanes, so being able to predict which ones will make the transition could help improve forecasts. Ruppert et al. show that infrared（红外线） radiation trapped（收集，抓捕，使陷入困境，圈套）by the deep clouds found in these precursor（前辈，先兆，初期形式）storms causes local heating that is key for their development into full-blown tropical cyclones. Incorporating these insights about the role of cloud-radiation feedback into numerical models could lead to better representations of tropical cyclone genesis（起源） and intensification（强度）.
