Up in the Air-11
Talk on marriage.
-
This is how I start every day of my life.
-
Now, this is gonna be a little difficult, so stay with me(认真听).
-
You have a new backpack. Only this time, I want you to fill it with people.
-
Start with casual acquaintances(熟人), friends of friends, folks around the office.
-
And then you move into the people that you trust with your most intimate(隐私) secrets. Your cousins, your aunts, your uncles, your brothers, your sisters, your parents.
-
And finally, your husband, your wife, your boyfriend or your girlfriend. You get them into that backpack.
-
Don’t worry. I’m not gonna ask you to light it on fire.
-
Feel the weight of that bag. Make no mistake(毋庸置疑), your relationships are the heaviest components(部分) in your life.
-
Do you feel the straps(肩带)cutting into your shoulders(紧紧勒着你的肩膀)? All those negotiations(谈判), arguments, secrets and compromises(妥协).
-
Some animals were meant to carry each other(相互扶持), to live symbiotically(栖息地) for a lifetime. Star-crossed(命运多舛) lovers, monogamous(一夫一妻的) swans.
-
We are not those animals. The slower we move, the faster we die.
-
We are not swans. We’re sharks.
-
Never want kids?
-
Not a chance(绝不可能).
-
Never. Is that so bizarre(奇怪)?
-
I just don’t see the value in it. All right, sell it to me.
-
Sell me marriage.
-
Okay, how about love?
-
Stability, just somebody you can count on(指望,依靠).
-
How many stable marriages(稳定的婚姻) do you know?
-
Somebody to talk to, someone to spend your life with.
-
I’m surrounded by people to talk to. I doubt that’s going to change(我不觉得这会改变).
-
How about just not dying alone?
-
Starting when I was 12, we moved each one of my grandparents into a nursing facility(养老院). My parents went the same way.
-
Make no mistake, we all die alone.
-
I should give you both a moment.(我需要给你们一点时间)
-
No. No, that’s fine. I’m fine. It’s a pleasure to meet you.
-
Maybe we should just all go up to our rooms and freshen up(梳洗打扮).
-
Or maybe a drink?
-
Now you’re talking(你说的太对了).
doubt与suspect这两个词的共同意思是“怀疑”。
它们的区别是:
1.两者都可以接that从句作宾语,但含义不同:
doubt的意思是“疑为非”;
suspect的意思是“疑为是”。
试比较:
I doubt that she is the criminal.
我不相信她是罪犯。(认为不见得)
I suspect that she is the criminal.
我怀疑她是罪犯。(认为有可能)
